What Simon
says
"The recording
studio has been designed specifically as a residential track laying facility.
To
that
end
there is very little outboard gear. In fact there isn't even a control
room in
the
true
sense of the word.
The reason for this
is that after a disturbing number of years
in
padded, air conditioned rooms, I found that I had become allergic
to
banks of LEDs and acres of knobs all demanding my attention. Many
musicians seemed to agree with me.
I finally realised
that most recording studios, including
the ones that I had built and owned over
many years, were designed primarily for the
equipment and the engineer rather than for
the music and the musician.
It also dawned on
me that as a producer buying studio time,
I was spending a significant amount of my
budget on gear that I wouldn't need
until I started mixing. For 80% of the time
all I needed was the room,
some mics, a mixer and something to record
onto. The racks of FX and
outboard were a complete waste of money.
.......a rethink
seemed necessary.
So Lime Kiln Studio
at La Calera is a large, open space with
windows and great views that has been designed
for musicians and to be great to play in.
The equipment is banished to a corner where
it can fulfill its function to record the
music cleanly and professionally and yet
unobtrusively as possible.
And outside the
sun is shining, the pool is waiting and someone
has fired up the BBQ ready for when we get
that backtrack nailed".
