Engineer, producer and owner of Lime
Kiln Recording Studio at La Calera, Andalucia, Spain, Simon Fraser
has over forty years of experience in the music
industry.
From his cub beginnings in 1967 as journalist, Simon, who now uses
the alias
SiFi in his production work, found himself part of the resident folk band 'The
Clan' on Thames TV’s series, My Kind Of Folk in the same year. Over the 10 part
series, the band opened for the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Donovan and The
Seekers. Simon left Hampshire for London in 1969.
That year, he was signed to EMI as a contract songwriter where he wrote “album
fillers for bubblegum bands and various past-it British pop stars.” He’s also
proud to recall that he supplemented his work with EMI as a lighting engineer
in several strip clubs. By 1972, SiFi was playing with legendary prog band, Aardvark,
and as a session bassist for heavyweight producers, Micky Most and Denny Cordell.
With the velveteen seventies well under way, SiFi jacked in London in 1974 for
Cornwall to join the Footsbarn Theatre as a musician and was part of the original
line up of country rock band, Charlie and The Wideboys who were signed to Anchor
Records.
After troubadouring it up, he joined the infamous Sawmills Studios
in 1977 as a sound engineer, before buying the studios outright in
1980. As well as making
his home at the idyllic studio, SiFi’s career at The Sawmills as a producer and
engineer continued for the next 25 years, over which time seminal acts such as
Wet Wet Wet,The Stone Roses, Mick Taylor, Supergrass and Oasis passed through
the Studio.
In 2005, SiFi made the move to Spain where he set up Lime Kiln Studio
at La Calera, his home and business to date. Over the last two years,
after converting the
dilapidated property into the highly desirable and functional Andalucian idyll
that it is, he’s worked with several classical Spanish outfits as well as a credible
roster of British artists who’ve found the European sojourn an ideal and fulfilling
way to record.
SiFi's client list over the years include:
Secret Affair, Steve Strange, ABC, Wet Wet Wet, Elvis Costello
and The Attractions, the Sex Pistols, The Swans, Steve Swindells, Abel
Sanchez,
Mick Taylor, Steve
Hillage, The Stone Roses, Ocean Colour Scene, Ralph McTell, Supergrass, New Model
Army, Lily Fraser, XTC, The Farm, The Almighty, Cast, Turning Green (to name
a few…)
